Welcome to NHBC Standards 2020
This new edition will be effective for every new home registered with NHBC where foundations are begun on or after 1 January 2020.
We are at a time when the need to increase housing output is tempered by the on-going skills shortage, exacerbated by a period of significant political and economic uncertainty.
Nevertheless, the industry is an entrepreneurial and resilient one: solutions tend to be found, which should give us confidence for the longer term.
Against that back-drop, NHBC’s focus remains firmly on helping to improve build quality for people living in brand new homes across the UK, reducing construction defects, improving homeowner satisfaction and avoiding the need for remedial work. This is in all of our interests.
Our dedicated standards team have spent the past year developing technical content and updates to form the new Standards, working with stakeholders from across the industry.
Updates to the new version include a focus on Chapter 6.6 ‘Staircases’ to ensure that it is clear and concise, and a review of tolerances in Chapter 9.1 ‘A consistent approach to finishes’ containing guidance for issues right at the heart of homeowner satisfaction.
We feel that these alterations will enhance the existing Standards, providing additional support and guidance, and helping builders and developers to deliver a high standard of new home for the people who live in them.
